The Water Is Safer

song title inspired by the poem "Home" by Warsan Shire

brother came running like his hair was on fire

jumped over the fence and cut through the wire
and we knew something wasn’t right ...
sister ran screaming down the old dirt road
her face as white as the year’s first snow
and we knew something wasn’t right ...

that night, the sky was raining fire
that night, the wolf was at our door
caught in the trap, they cut you down beside her
the sirens screamed, the violent thunder roared

mother ran for the coast like a soul possessed
loaded us in the boat, put on an orange vest
and tried to tell us it would be alright ...
but she lost her grip when the wave crashed down
uncle jumped into to save her but they both drowned
and we knew it wouldn't be alright ...

that night, the sky was raining tears
that night, death was at our door
caught in the waves, it dragged you down beside her
the children screamed, the violent ocean roared

sister carried baby over the mountain road
not sure where we’re going but we can’t go home
and we prayed that it would be alright ...
brother’s at the fence where there are men with guns
he's begging for some mercy for the little ones
and we prayed we’d make it through the night ...

that night, the stars sparkled in your honor
that night, we looked for shelter once more
caught in between, we worry as we wander
the hunger screams, our empty stomachs roar
