Armor Bearer

you arrive just in time to toss me headlong
by all accounts, you were my greatest mistake
you gave me the gift of sleepless midnights

I am outnumbered here all alone
with the hint of your voice still on the phone
there is blood on the receiver from my ear
now your fingernails smell like my neck

I'm tired of digging this grave
only to bring it up each time
we meet face to floor in shame

I gladly fell on your sword
and wore my wounds as a badge of honor
what a fool

I am done

curse the day we cried
I've been cursed ever since

as you call my name,
you call down death against me on every side
